Tom Aspin leads the Digital Assets practice within Grant Thornton New Zealand’s Financial Advisory Services team. A specialist in digital asset insolvency, restructuring, investigations, and asset tracing and recovery, Tom also advises on internal controls, governance, and compliance for clients navigating the digital asset space. His experience spans New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, and the APAC region, sharpened by an international secondment to Grant Thornton’s London-based Digital Asset Recovery team.
Tom is the operational lead for the liquidations of Cryptopia Limited and Digital Asset Exchange Limited (Dasset) and serves as a subject matter expert to the liquidators of Bittrex Global (Bermuda) Ltd. He also undertakes expert witness work in cryptocurrency-related court proceedings and has led complex international asset recovery efforts. As part of the Cryptopia liquidation, Tom has helped facilitate the return of more than NZ$500 million in cryptocurrency to account holders, making it one of New Zealand’s largest and one of the world’s most significant on-chain insolvency distributions.
A Chartered Accountant with more than 11 years’ post-qualification experience, Tom is a regular speaker on digital asset insolvency, recovery, and emerging regulatory issues. His hands-on experience advising exchanges, insolvency practitioners, regulators, and legal teams provides a practical perspective on the opportunities and challenges shaping the digital asset sector.
